Harry Potter Brings Hogwarts-Inspired Christmas Lights to Oxford Street

Oxford Street’s Harry Potter lights switch on November 9, alongside a new flagship store and ahead of the series’ Christmas Day premiere.

Oxford Street’s Christmas display is giving London fans an early meeting with the new Harry Potter series. The street’s familiar star lights are being joined by designs inspired by the Wizarding World, with the switch-on set for 4:30 p.m. on Monday, November 9. The series itself is due to premiere on Christmas Day, making the display a highly visible introduction to HBO’s adaptation before it reaches screens.
The installation includes a heraldic banner bearing a lion crest in Gryffindor-style colors, a Harry Potter sign and themed string lights. Footage shared by Deadline showed decorations already suspended above the street. Time Out described a combination of the traditional stars and the new designs, bringing the fantasy property into one of London’s best-known shopping areas.

The lights arrive alongside a new Harry Potter flagship store on Oxford Street, which opens November 4, five days before the display’s switch-on. Together, the shop and decorations give fans two ways to mark the approaching series: a dedicated retail stop and a public holiday spectacle. The timing makes the street a natural gathering point for visitors already following the adaptation’s run-up.
The three young actors at the center of the series won’t attend the switch-on. Dominic McLaughlin, who plays Harry, Alastair Stout, who plays Ron, and Arabella Stanton, who plays Hermione, are absent as production on the second season continues. HBO said it is mindful of the young cast’s schedules and limits demands on their time outside filming and school. A spokesperson said the company was excited to bring the series to Oxford Street and to screens this Christmas.

The display has also prompted criticism. A petition from the not-for-profit Good Law Project gathered more than 10,000 signatures and was sent to London Mayor Sadiq Khan, asking for the lights to be cancelled. It argues that the decorations won’t make trans people feel welcome or safe. Khan’s office said he doesn’t organize the display; the New West End Company arranges the lights. A City Hall spokesperson said the mayor supports London’s diverse communities, including trans and non-binary Londoners.
The Sun, citing unnamed insiders, reported that concerns about possible protests also played a part in the young actors’ absence. HBO hasn’t confirmed that account, so the company’s stated explanation remains the production and school commitments of its young cast.

A new adaptation, with familiar names
The first season, titled ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, will run for 8 episodes. Mark Mylod is directing, and Francesca Gardiner serves as showrunner. HBO first announced the series in 2023; filming began at Leavesden Studios in July 2025. The Christmas Day premiere was revealed in March alongside the first teaser trailer.
The cast brings together the new leads and a set of established performers. John Lithgow plays Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu plays Snape, and Nick Frost takes on Hagrid. Janet McTeer is also among the main cast. Warwick Davis is currently the only actor from the original films confirmed to return.

Hans Zimmer is composing the score. J.K. Rowling is an executive producer, alongside Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts and David Heyman. Those credits, the new cast and a full season devoted to ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ give audiences several points of comparison with the earlier screen adaptations. The central question for viewers will be how this version makes the story its own across eight episodes.
For Oxford Street, the immediate draw is more straightforward: the lights offer a seasonal way to celebrate the franchise while the series approaches its premiere. The store opens first, the display follows, and the new adaptation arrives on Christmas Day. Fans can take in the street’s familiar stars alongside a fresh set of Hogwarts-inspired details—and then decide for themselves how the new cast brings the story to life.
