‘The Liberation’ Sets January Release for Guy Nattiv’s Family-Inspired Drama

Carrie Coon leads Guy Nattiv’s drama about a Holocaust survivor drawn into a women’s commune, with Lily James, Bella Ramsey and Odessa Young.

Guy Nattiv’s connection to The Liberation runs through his own family: the film takes inspiration from events in the life of his grandmother, who joined a cult. That personal starting point gives this drama about a mother and her daughters a particular focus. Rather than treating the commune as a distant mystery, the story follows the emotional ties that can make a new community feel like a chance to begin again.
Bleecker Street has shared a trailer for the film, which stars Carrie Coon as Rita Cooper and Lily James as Ricki King, the charismatic leader of an all-female commune. The distributor’s tagline, “Community comes at a cost,” points to the tension at the heart of the story: Rita is looking for a way forward, while her family fears that the life she has chosen is pulling her away from them.
A mother’s search for a new beginning
Set in the 1980s, The Liberation introduces Rita as a Holocaust survivor still wrestling with her past. She leaves her husband and family to join Harmonia, Ricki’s commune, hoping to find a fresh start. The film’s premise places that longing alongside the fear and uncertainty of the people she leaves behind, making the family’s separation central to the drama.
Tracy Letts plays Rita’s husband, who is left to reckon with her sudden departure. Their daughters, Ella and Jo, set out to bring their mother home. Bella Ramsey plays Ella, while Odessa Young plays Jo. The sisters’ attempt to reach Rita becomes more complicated when they, too, feel the commune’s attraction. Their changing responses raise the stakes: the family’s effort to reunite could draw the daughters into the same world they came to challenge.
That setup gives the film room to follow more than one perspective. Rita’s need to escape the weight of her past sits beside her daughters’ determination to reconnect with her, while Ricki’s influence shapes the choices each woman faces. The story’s tension comes from those competing needs and loyalties, rather than from the premise of a rescue alone.
An ensemble around Coon and James
The cast also includes Siobhan Williams as Shine, Maia Michaels as Sheeva, Sharon Taylor as Anya, Nels Lennarson as Jeffrey and John Cassini as Dr. Solomon. Coon anchors the film as a woman seeking healing and belonging; James plays a leader whose magnetism draws people toward Harmonia. Ramsey and Young bring the daughters’ perspective into the family conflict, and Letts plays the husband trying to hold the family together from outside Rita’s new life.
The trailer’s close attention to Coon’s face suggests a performance built around Rita’s inner strain. The film’s early reception has also drawn attention to its central cast. The Hollywood Reporter described it as a “devastatingly empathetic cult drama,” and critics have praised the performances by Coon, Ramsey and James. Those responses offer an early indication of the film’s character-led approach, though audiences will be able to judge the full work when it reaches theaters.
Nattiv co-wrote the screenplay with Noa Berman-Herzberg. The family inspiration adds a personal dimension to a story about how people come to depend on a group, and what it can cost to leave their earlier lives behind. Rita’s history as a Holocaust survivor further shapes her search for safety and connection. The film frames her attraction to Harmonia through that need for a new beginning, while keeping her daughters’ concern in view.
