15 Sapphic Books Featuring Established Couples, from Fantasy to Mystery

Established couple

An established relationship can give a story a different kind of romantic tension: instead of asking whether two people will get together, it asks what might test the life they’ve already built. This Sapphic Book Bingo category gathers 15 sapphic books whose central characters begin in an existing relationship. The relationship needn’t drive the whole plot, and the list ranges across contemporary drama, fantasy, suspense, science fiction and mystery.

Some couples face caregiving, trauma or the strain of a new challenge. Others are caught up in supernatural threats, a missing fiancée or an elaborate proposal. Together, these books offer plenty of ways to read the category beyond a straightforward love story.

Love tested by life’s upheavals

In Why Not Us? by Naomi Rivers, Jasmine’s longtime girlfriend, T, is already part of her life when Jasmine’s best friend Leslie is diagnosed with cancer. Jasmine throws herself into supporting Leslie through treatment and caring for her nine-year-old daughter, Portia. T responds to the crisis differently, stepping back as Jasmine moves closer to the turmoil. Medical appointments, family responsibilities and the demands of caregiving leave the couple struggling to stay connected. The story follows the pressure on their relationship as Jasmine tries to care for the people she loves without losing the life she shares with T.

Shay Paris’s Forget Me Not opens with Gracie at a high point: her band has booked a national tour, she’s reached the top of a waitlist for her dream dog, and her girlfriend has proposed. Then an accident erases the last five years of Gracie’s memory. When Gracie wakes asking for her college boyfriend, fiancée Ashley has to face a relationship that Gracie can no longer remember. The premise puts questions of identity, history and lasting affection at the center of a couple’s uncertain new reality.

The Gravity of Her Love by Skye Von Triessen also begins after a couple has found each other. Dominique Dupont has escaped a life that nearly broke her, while Robyn Diamont’s resilience comes from a painful past she rarely discusses. As they build a future together, old wounds and outside pressures threaten the fragile peace they’ve made. The book asks whether love can help them choose one another through what comes next.

For a later-life story set against a harsh change in the world, Sophia Kell Hagin’s Not All a Dream follows Hester after the death of the woman she loved for more than half her septuagenarian life. Having survived a plague together, Hester is left alone just weeks before the world falls into persistent darkness and cold. Grief leaves her unsure what she is enduring for, until she encounters people who show her that survival doesn’t have to mean facing everything by herself.

Fantasy, magic and distant worlds

Virginia Black’s Incendiant follows Joan Matthews and Leigh Phan, whose shared history includes saving their hometown of Calvert. Now separated, they each face danger. Joan, a war witch, protects a town rebuilding after a vampire crisis, though not everyone agrees with her approach. Leigh’s bloodling powers bring unexpected consequences, while Joan must repay a favor to a dangerous foe. Attacks that seem unrelated hint at a wider threat, and the couple must find ways to survive apart if they’re to protect what they’ve gained together.

Kimberly A. Todd’s V.A.M.P. Book Four – Origins puts Katerina and Serena’s future under pressure. Their wedding is on hold, a council seat remains unclaimed and a vampire army is close at hand. Katerina must pursue something ancient, confront her fears about leading vampires and try to save her future wife from death. Serena, meanwhile, has to watch the person she loves face danger while managing her own heartbreak and the weight of the past.

In Search for the Summer Stone by Reba Birmingham, Panda and Mitzi Fowler set out to find another fragment of the Circle of Stones after barely surviving the events surrounding the Winter Stone. Their search takes them to Namibia, where the Summer Stone is also sought by forces threatening the Free Creatures. Panda has two weeks to learn to call and control ravens before the mission begins. Mitzi is pulled into a dangerous detour involving the new leader of Lupus Imperium, leaving their plans—and whether they’ll reach Africa together—in question. Retired cop Charlie Potts joins them for security, but the trip soon proves far from a holiday.

The Fleet Admiral’s Daughter by J.A. Gaudio blends space adventure with Sarah Miller’s complicated inheritance. A captain whose future was meant to unfold on Earth is ordered to take her father Fleet Admiral Douglas Miller’s place after he steps down. With her twin brother Max beside her, Sarah enters a demanding world of military leadership and interstellar politics while wrestling with PTSD and a past that haunts her. Lieutenant Commander Annie Jones becomes an unexpected source of warmth, though the couple’s romance faces danger in a galaxy where duty weighs heavily.

S. Y. Thompson’s Besieging the Moon sends Commodore Van Swann and her wife, Cade Meryan, into a crisis near Saturn. After an unknown adversary attacks the Titan Defense Installation, Van leads a fleet to defend the moon, while Cade follows from her position as Alara’s High Queen. The fleet is swiftly decimated, leaving them to search for a way to repel the invaders. An ancient weapon and help from a new friend offer a possible path, but the solution requires a journey to Earth, now a penal colony for the Alliance’s worst offenders.

Mystery, suspense and romantic complications

Jae’s Next of Kin pairs ambitious Deputy District Attorney Kade Matheson with Lieutenant Del Vasquez, who has admired her from a distance. Kade has spent years prioritizing case files and law books over romance, and she initially tries to manage a stalker on her own. When the situation worsens and she and Del take refuge at Kade’s mother’s home, Kade has to confront her attraction to women. The danger around her and the unfamiliar feelings between them arrive at once.

In J.A. Rainbow’s Death on the Dream, Ellie and Kate are settling into their new relationship when Aunt Peggy invites them on a cruise she won in a radio quiz. The promised break becomes a murder mystery after a fellow passenger dies. Ellie tries to work out what happened before Aunt Peggy gets involved, giving this developing couple an unexpected puzzle to solve together.

Rita Potter’s Seat 11C begins with Drew Tolbert expecting her fiancée, Kate Mulligan, to sit beside her on a flight to Chicago. Instead, the pair are separated on the plane, and a stranger occupies Kate’s seat when they land. Drew searches for her and finds more questions than answers. As details of their trip begin to look strange, she has to reconsider how well she knew the woman she planned to marry.

Mia Kazi’s The Faberge Egg, the second Jo Brigg’s novel, follows Jo and Izzy after An Unusual Year as they try to share a home. Their domestic adjustment is interrupted by a mystery involving a lost Faberge Egg, Russian money laundering and a Russian teacher with secrets and surprises. Their next adventure tests whether they can make a life together while finding their way through the case.

Fairy-tale contrasts and a proposal plan

Kimberly J.M. Wilson’s The Actress: Canceling Cordelia casts an established marriage as a clash between an icy, cleanliness-obsessed princess and a messy fire princess determined to remake their palace around love. The setup gives the book its opposites-attract fairy-tale energy, with a deliberately unconventional romance at its heart.

In Deconstructed by Sharon K Angelici, firefighter Ella Eastman has been with Morgan for eight years and wants to create the perfect proposal. Inspired by Morgan’s to-be-read pile, Ella tries to weave favorite romance tropes into the big question. Her attempts keep going awry, drawing the couple’s chosen family into “Operation Perfect Proposal.” The story revisits the Rage Room Romance’s community as Ella discovers that a memorable moment may not follow a flawless plan.

The list’s 15 books show how much room the established-couple premise leaves for different kinds of storytelling. Readers can choose a relationship-focused drama, a fantasy mission, a mystery or a proposal gone imperfectly right. For more Sapphic Book Bingo recommendations, the author invites readers to subscribe to the blog; the next reading list is due next Thursday.
