American Horror Story Renewed for Season 14 on FX After Season 13 Ratings Success

FX has renewed American Horror Story for Season 14, extending a run that has made Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s anthology the network’s longest-running hourlong series. The pickup arrives as Season 13 approaches its finale, while details about the next installment remain scarce: FX has yet to share its cast, setting or premiere date.

The renewal follows what The Hollywood Reporter describes as a strong ratings performance for the current season. It also puts the series within reach of passing 150 episodes. As of mid-October, 142 episodes had aired; Season 13 is scheduled to finish with 13 episodes. That steady accumulation is part of the show’s unusual appeal: each season can reshape the premise, while returning performers and familiar stories give longtime viewers threads to follow.

Season 13 is built around one of those threads. The new run continues the story of Coven, bringing back characters from earlier seasons as they confront a threat to the world. The plot centers on the devil nearing the end of a bet with God: he must survive in a human body for 100 years. If he succeeds, he will rule Earth, Heaven and Hell.

Joey Pollari plays a hospice care worker who fears the number 13 and is assigned to care for characters from the show’s past. That role gives the season a framework for reuniting its returning cast. Murphy has likened the large-scale gathering to The Avengers, and the production rebuilt the Robichaux Academy, the setting associated with Coven.

Jessica Lange’s return is one of the season’s biggest draws. She had previously said she didn’t plan to come back, making her involvement a notable surprise. Other familiar names include Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe and Leslie Grossman.

The returning performers also include Frances Conroy, Jamie Brewer, John Carroll Lynch, Mena Suvari and Mat Fraser. Seth Gabel joins them after appearing in the spinoff American Horror Stories. Their presence gives Season 13 a broad connection to the franchise’s earlier chapters, though FX has not said whether any of them will appear in Season 14.

Season 13 has added new performers to that established ensemble. Avantika, Orlando Jones, Paul Anthony Kelly, Tig Notaro, Madelaine Petsch, Zach Villa and filmmaker John Waters are among the newcomers. Whether the next season will continue with an overlapping cast or introduce a fresh group is still an open question.

The scale of the series is reflected in its reported audience and awards record. FX says American Horror Story has generated more than 2 billion hours of engagement since its first season. Since its 2011 debut, it has received more than 100 Primetime Emmy Award nominations and won 17. Those figures help explain why the network is continuing the series, though they offer no clues about the creative direction of the next chapter.

Season 13 premiered on September 24. New episodes air Thursdays at 9/8c on FX and stream the following day on Hulu; viewers outside the United States can watch on Disney+. The finale is scheduled for Thursday, October 29, just over a week after the Season 14 renewal was announced.

Murphy has said he hopes to keep making the series indefinitely and has also discussed expanding the franchise internationally. For now, there’s no word on when or where Season 14 will take place, or which performers might return. Those choices will determine whether the next installment builds on the current season’s reunion or takes the anthology in a new direction.

Murphy and Falchuk created American Horror Story, which is produced by 20th Television. Season 13’s executive producers include Ned Martel, Charlie Carver, Jennifer Salt and Tim Minear, among others. With the Coven witches back at the center of the story, the finale may offer clues about where the series can go next; the renewal ensures there will be another chapter to follow.
