Frozen 3 Sets Up Elsa’s Most Powerful Rival Yet
Story by Josip Kraljik · 792 readers
A mysterious new foe, Anna and Kristoff’s wedding, and fresh songs shape Frozen 3, arriving November 24, 2027.

Elsa may soon face a magical rival whose abilities exceed her own. Disney Animation chief Jared Bush says Frozen 3 will bring a new villain into the series, describing the character as someone who “may be more powerful than Elsa.” The promise of a threat on that scale gives the sequel a sharp new question: how will Elsa and Anna respond when the familiar limits of Elsa’s magic no longer seem sufficient?
Bush shared the update while speaking with Collider’s Steve Weintraub at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival. He confirmed that the antagonist’s performer has recorded the role multiple times, though the actress’s name and the character’s identity remain undisclosed. Bush offered no further details, leaving the villain’s history and motives open.
The character appeared briefly in footage shown at Disney’s D23 showcase in August. Viewers heard her voice but didn’t see her face. She was presented as a woman with short black hair, wearing a dark cloak and cape, and she addressed Anna and Elsa as “the famous sisters of Arendelle.” Reports from the event described her as having ice powers that rival Elsa’s. That comparison raises the stakes, but the film’s creators haven’t explained what those powers can do or what the woman wants.
Her introduction arrives alongside a more familiar family milestone. Frozen 3 opens on Anna and Kristoff’s wedding, following Kristoff’s proposal at the end of Frozen 2. Bush said there isn’t much time between the two films, so the story picks up soon after the earlier chapter. In the D23 footage, the wedding night is interrupted when the Northern Lights descend over Arendelle’s fjord. Elsa then discovers a frozen walkway leading into the aurora.
Those images point toward a journey beyond the sisters’ usual surroundings. Idina Menzel has described the world beyond the portal as wilder and more dangerous than anything Elsa has created. That description suggests the setting itself may test the characters, though the available footage doesn’t reveal what lies along the path or how the sisters will reach it. For now, the aurora and the unknown visitor offer two glimpses of a story that appears to combine exploration with a direct challenge to Elsa.

The music is taking shape alongside the story. Songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez are about five songs into their work, Bush said, and are writing one of the film’s most emotional numbers. He also hinted at a spectacular song set around the wedding but kept its details under wraps. The team’s early progress offers a taste of the sequel’s musical range without revealing how the songs fit into the plot.

Olaf will have a romantic thread of his own. His snowy girlfriend is named Samantha, a payoff to a mention in the post-credits scene of Frozen 2. At D23, Josh Gad performed a new song for Olaf about Samantha, described as a mix of calypso and disco. Menzel and Kristen Bell also performed new material at the showcase, giving fans a first taste of the sequel’s songs.

Disney is already looking beyond this sequel. Jennifer Lee is writing and directing both Frozen 3 and Frozen 4, and Bush said the creative team is considering how to build toward an ending that feels worthy of the franchise. He also stressed that character journeys matter more to him than plotting every detail in advance, since too much rigidity can narrow the creative process. That approach leaves room for the characters and story to develop as the films take shape.
Lee returns to write and direct Frozen 3, with Trent Correy as co-director. The returning voice cast includes Kristen Bell as Anna, Idina Menzel as Elsa, Jonathan Groff as Kristoff and Josh Gad as Olaf. The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 24, 2027, continuing the Thanksgiving release window used by the first two films.
The sequel has several threads to balance: a wedding, Olaf’s new romance, songs at different emotional registers and an antagonist whose strength may surpass Elsa’s. The most revealing details remain under wraps, but the early clues frame the next chapter around change within the family and a world that stretches beyond what Elsa knows. The identity and purpose of the new foe will be the details to watch as Disney shares more.
