Avengers: Doomsday Joins the NBA’s 2026 Season-Opening Tripleheader

The NBA and Avengers: Doomsday share the spotlight as basketball returns, linking the film’s December release to a packed season of games.

Marvel’s latest basketball crossover gives the NBA’s return a superhero frame, and the calendar makes the pairing especially timely. Released on October 20, the new Avengers: Doomsday promo arrived on the day the league began its 81st season, placing the film in front of basketball fans as the opening night’s games got underway.
A familiar meeting of basketball and Marvel
The promo presents NBA players as Avengers, tying the league’s new season to Marvel’s upcoming film. Its lettering reads “NBA Is Back” in the metallic style associated with the franchise, set against a green glow that echoes the Doctor Doom imagery used in the film’s marketing. The short spot gives the league and the movie a shared moment without requiring viewers to know the full story of Avengers: Doomsday.
It also extends a relationship between Disney’s sports and superhero properties. ESPN and Marvel previously built a special broadcast called Marvel’s Arena of Heroes around a game between the Golden State Warriors and New Orleans Pelicans. That presentation used 3D virtual characters, custom graphics and animation to bring Iron Man, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Captain America, Black Widow and Doctor Strange into the telecast. Its story imagined the Avengers scouting NBA players to join them.
The new spot is a simpler crossover, but the idea will be familiar to viewers of that earlier broadcast: basketball stars are recast as potential superhero teammates. As Lainey Gossip observed, ESPN’s place within Disney makes the collaboration an in-house pairing.
Opening night gives the crossover its moment
The NBA’s first night offered a substantial stage for the tie-in. October 20 opened with the Boston Celtics facing the Detroit Pistons in a 3 p.m. ET matinee, followed by the Philadelphia 76ers visiting the defending champion New York Knicks. The Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs then closed the tripleheader with a rematch of the Western Conference Finals. It was the first time the season had opened with three games on NBC and Peacock.
The 76ers-Knicks game carried a separate point of interest: it marked LeBron James’ first appearance with Philadelphia, according to the source article. For fans moving between the games and the film promo, the night connected a roster of recognizable basketball names with a familiar ensemble of Marvel characters. The response on social media reflected both sides of that appeal, with fans welcoming basketball’s return and showing interest in the next Avengers film. Some viewers, though, wanted their preferred teams or players to get more screen time.
That reaction points to the particular challenge of a league-wide crossover. A short promo can signal a broad partnership, while individual fans naturally look for the player or team they follow. The spot’s shared Avengers framing makes room for the NBA as a whole; the limited running time leaves little space to feature every star.
A busy season for Disney’s basketball platforms
The timing also fits a season when NBA viewership has been strong. The 2025-26 regular season drew 170 million viewers across ABC/ESPN, Amazon Prime Video, NBC/Peacock and NBA TV, the highest total in 24 years. ABC and ESPN are entering their 25th consecutive season of NBA coverage and will carry 80 regular-season games, including a five-game Christmas Day slate.
That holiday schedule falls one week after Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters. One of the Christmas games will revisit the 2026 NBA Finals, with the Knicks hosting the Spurs. For the film, the overlap means its December release lands amid a high-profile run of basketball broadcasts; for the league, Marvel adds another recognizable piece of entertainment around the start of the season. The schedule supplies the connection, while the promo gives it a visual identity.
Basketball references have already surfaced in conversation about the film. After Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom was revealed, Clutch Points asked fans to describe the casting in basketball terms. Some compared it to Michael Jordan’s return to the NBA. That comparison captures the draw of a familiar star taking on a new role, though the film’s own story will determine what Downey’s return means for the franchise.
What the promo adds to the film rollout
The NBA spot joins several teasers for Avengers: Doomsday. The first trailer confirmed Chris Evans’ return as Steve Rogers, and Marvel skipped a Super Bowl spot for the film this year. The league collaboration instead places the title alongside a major live sports occasion, reaching audiences through a shared interest in basketball and superhero stories.

Directed by the Russo brothers, Avengers: Doomsday brings Downey back as Victor von Doom. Chris Hemsworth also returns as Thor, in the warrior persona last seen in Avengers: Infinity War. The film is part of Phase 6 of the MCU, with Avengers: Secret Wars scheduled to follow on December 17, 2027. Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026.

The crossover’s immediate appeal is easy to read: the NBA gets a familiar superhero treatment for opening night, and the film gains visibility at the start of a season with a large audience. The next question for fans is which players they would most like to see suited up as Avengers—and whether future promos will give those stars more room.
